What followed February 2020 was a series of unfortunate events. It was on 12 March 2020 that India reported its first COVID-19 fatality and on the 23rd of the same month, the Indian government declared a nationwide lockdown. That apprehension and chaos that followed next were worse for some people. The rapid outspread of the virus alone was not the only concern. It was the lack of preparation as well as the economic recession and depression that caused the ruination of millions of lives not only in India but all over the globe.

Many professionals in India were given the boot or furlongs due to the recession. According to Statista, in April 2020, the unemployment rate in India went up to almost 24%. Among those who lost their jobs, migrant workers were hit the worst. The aviation, hospitality and travel sectors were the areas that took the hardest hit as well.

Scarcity in job opportunities for the recently unemployed and those who were already on the job hunt caused depression and anxiety for many.

But all that was last year. This is 2021, a year of hope and opportunities. With the development of various Covid vaccines, it is now unchallenging to go back to normal, well at least the new normal that we now have to live with. 2021 came with some good news for job seekers. Many companies in various sectors have opened their offices again and are back to the hiring sprees.

So, if you want to get back on the horse and rebuild your career after your job loss,

Here are a few tips you could use to find your dream job in India.

Review and Reflect:

If given the chance to go back to the time before you were let go, what would you have done differently? It’s safe to say that you were among those who were let go because of something you lack. What it is, only you can answer. Reflecting on this will pave the way for you to do things differently this time.

Have a Forte:

One effective way to make yourself layoff-proof is to have a specific skill that you excel at. Be so good at it that you are the one that people come to for help. Having a valuable skill will make you a significant part of the office.

Develop/Polish your Tech Skills:

The world has now changed and so has the job landscape. As we are undergoing digital transformation, the need for tech skills has escalated. So, you might want to polish your tech skills before you rejoin the corporate world.

Know your JD:

So, whether you are after the same position you had earlier or a new one, go through the job description thoroughly, know which skills are required for the role and master them.

Enhance your Emotional Intelligence:

We now have to live with coronavirus and with the constant fear of it,  tensions are going to be high at the workplace. You are going to need a coping mechanism and learn to empathize with others in order to have a successful professional relationship with your coworkers, which ultimately is important for teamwork.

Devise New Ideas and Projects you could pitch:

You are going to need a unique selling point to get your dream job. You would probably have time to cook up something unique and innovative to present to your potential employers. This will make you stand out from the many other candidates who are after the same position as yours.
